Module D3 - 英語成語 (第四課第一節)


除了傳統題目、模擬情境參考及詞彙以外，我們還加入一些日常英語成語 (idioms)、常用語等等。以下是我們當中 Module 其中一課內容; 而我們亦有其他成語課堂在其他章節之中。




A penny for your thoughts – “給你一個便士要求你的想法”


When asking for someone’s opinion or thoughts on something 意思:求他人的意見或想法 例句: 'I'll give you a penny if you tell me your thoughts' (如果你告訴我你的想法我給你一個便士)


An arm 手臂 and a leg 腳 “一手一腳”


When you complain that something might be overly priced 當你埋怨/投訴某些事物太過昂貴. For example: 'This lady handbag cost me an arm and a leg!! 這個女裝手袋太昂貴了' (這個女裝手袋要我一手一腳!!) 


The ball is in your court “球在你的球場裏” 


It means it is up to you to make the next move. 解作由你決定下一步該怎樣做。 你可以幻想成 : "球在你手，何時開波由你決定!"


Beat around the bush “在草叢周圍敲打着”


Purposely avoiding the topic matter and not speaking directly about the issue. 這裏是指你有目的地避免觸及題目, 而不正面討論。


Biting more than you can chew “咬 (bite) 住多個你可以咀嚼 (chew) 的”


Trying to accomplish something that is too difficult for you. 嘗試完成 (accomplish*) 一些對你太過困難的事情。


Best thing since sliced bread 切片麵包之後最好的事情 


Basically meaning a good invention, innovation, idea or plan. British always think sliced bread is the best thing in life. 英國人往往認為最好的事情就是切片麵包。 在這裏解作一些很好的發明、創意或計劃。


You can’t judge a book by its cover 你不能單靠書本封面而決定內容好與否


Mean one should not judge something or someone by how it looks – 不要單單靠外表而判定一些人或事情的好與壞。


Curiosity killed the cat “好奇害死貓” 


Finding out an answer may in fact ruin the question for you. 表示不要因太過好奇 (尋根究柢) 要知道答案, 而最終害了自己 。


Don’t count your chickens before your eggs have hatched 


在你的雞蛋孵化 (hatched) 之前不要點算雞的數目。

Avoid plan for something that might not happen at all. 不要為一些不可能發生的事情而計劃 (要浪費精力或時間) 。


Don’t give up your day job 不要放棄你日間工作


A common saying implies that you are not very good at something, so you shouldn’t try it too seriously or, at all. 常用的說法暗示你並不專長 (或做得好) 某一件事，因此不用太認真或甚至乎不要開始。
